In recent weeks, several pharmacies have announced that they will no longer sell generic levitra (Levitra) after the FDA had issued a public health advisory, indicating that the drug has received generic approval. The FDA had not issued a decision until this week.
The FDA advisory came as the agency announced that patients who took an older version of Levitra and experienced an adverse event were still able to purchase the drug.
The FDA warned that patients with serious heart, liver, kidney or respiratory issues may need a lower dose of the drug, which could cause serious heart or liver problems if they had been taking the older version for years. The FDA noted that patients taking generic versions of the drug were not eligible for the prescription benefit.
The FDA also warned that the warning was “not meant to be a deterrent” for patients to switch to the generic version of Levitra.
Levitra, the active ingredient in Viagra, is the first drug to offer the “new” option for men who have erectile dysfunction (ED).
In its recent news release, the FDA said, “These drugs have been on the market since their introduction as of March 25, 1998. The Food and Drug Administration has determined that the drugs have been effective in treating a significant number of men with ED.”
In its public comments section on the announcement, FDA Commissioner Margaret out-ographics the statement “We have not approved Levitra for marketing.”
“We are working with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to provide the generic product, Viagra, at a reduced price. The manufacturer is currently accepting and marketing the product as an alternative to the brand name drug,” FDA director Scott Gottlieb said. “The FDA approved Viagra for the treatment of ED in 1998 and will be able to approve generic Levitra and Cialis as well.”
Viagra will be available from pharmacies throughout the country.
Originally, the drug was developed as a heart medication by Eli Lilly & Co., maker of Eli Lilly’s Cialis.
In 2013, Eli Lilly received FDA approval to market a generic version of Levitra.
The generic was developed by Eli Lilly and Company, a pharmaceutical company that makes a name brand drug called Levitra.
“We are pleased that Pfizer, Inc. and several other pharmaceutical companies have received FDA approval to market a generic version of Levitra,” FDA Commissioner Margaret outographics the statement. “It was a big relief to know that these drugs have been able to offer men who have erectile dysfunction with the original medication have the same effect.”
FDA’s analysis showed that men who took Levitra had a reduced risk of developing heart disease and a reduced risk of developing certain cancers.
“We are now pleased that Pfizer, Inc. and several other pharmaceutical companies have received FDA approval to market a generic version of Levitra,” FDA director Scott Gottlieb said.
The FDA noted that patients with serious heart, liver, kidney or respiratory issues may need a lower dose of the generic product, which could cause serious heart or liver problems if they had been taking the older version for years. The FDA added that patients taking generic versions of the drug were not eligible for the prescription benefit.

Cialis, another popular erectile dysfunction drug, has also received FDA approval. Cialis is the active ingredient in Lilly’s generic version of Levitra.
